Plumbing Emergencies Are Messy – 6 Helpful Steps

When plumbing misbehaves, water damage is the most frequent consequence. If you have ever experienced a pipe, toilet or faucet break, you know how big of a problem a water issue can be for your home and your family.

1. Stay Calm

Don’t panic or become distracted by attempting do-it-yourself repairs when critical plumbing problems are bubbling up.

2. Turn Off the Water Main

All adult residents in the house should be familiar with the location of the main water shutoff valve and how to turn it off. Test the valve once a year for proper operation. If it feels difficult to turn, don’t attempt to force it, and consult a plumber.

3. Shut Down the Water Heater

Water inside the water heater tank is under pressure. Shut off water supply to the heater by closing the cold water inlet valve on top of the heater. Anytime water to the heater is shut off, the water heater gas valve should also be turned to the “off” position.

4. Open Outdoor Faucets

To more thoroughly empty the supply lines after the main water valve is shut off, open the outdoor faucets and allow the pipes to drain.

5. Stop Small Leaks

If you notice minor leakage from a loose joint or pinhole in a pipe, until the plumber arrives you can try plumber’s putty to plug the leak. Even wrapping the faulty pipe or joint with a rag and putting a bucket or pan underneath can help reduce the spread of leaked water.

6. If Possible, Attempt to Unclog Drains

If standard DIY methods such as using a plunger fail to open a blocked drain, don’t delay calling professional help. One obstructed pipe can affect multiple drains and cause water reflux and damage.
